More than 1,000 devotees and well-wishers gathered on Sunday, April 19, 2026, to mark a significant milestone in the development of the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Austin: the Bhumi Pujan, or sacred ground-breaking ceremony.
The occasion followed an earlier sanctification ritual conducted on March 17 in Sarangpur, India, where His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj consecrated the sand and bricks destined for the Austin site. His blessings set the spiritual foundation for what devotees described as a long-awaited project shaped by years of devotion and voluntary service.
The Bhumi Pujan ceremony blended religious tradition with civic recognition. Among those visiting the site ahead of the formal proceedings were Congressman Pete Sessions and Mr. Manjunath Chenneerappa, India’s Consul General in Houston, both of whom addressed attendees and offered their support.
At the heart of the event was a traditional mahapuja, performed amid Vedic chants invoking peace, harmony, and well-being for the wider Austin community. The ceremony was led by senior BAPS swamis.
Local civic leadership was also represented, including Councilmember Mike Siegel, alongside representatives from Hindu organizations and the broader Indian-American community.
For many in attendance, the Bhumi Pujan symbolized more than the beginning of construction. It marked the start of a new chapter for BAPS in Central Texas. The planned mandir is expected to serve not only as a place of worship, but also as a center for cultural education, spiritual growth, and community service.
As the first ceremonial steps give way to physical construction, organizers said the project stands as a testament to collective effort and shared vision, rooted in faith and dedicated to serving the broader Austin community.
