In a radiant display of unity and cultural harmony, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Los Angeles hosted Sangam, an interfaith and multicultural Diwali celebration that brought together a remarkable confluence of communities, leaders, and cultures.
From diplomats and interfaith representatives to scholars, athletes, business executives, and cultural organizations, Sangam served as a living embodiment of Diwali’s message — the triumph of light over darkness and unity over division. The evening fostered understanding among diverse communities, strengthened ties with India and the Indian diaspora, and deepened mutual respect for the Mandir’s mission of faith in action.

A Welcoming Beginning

The celebration began with a warm reception in the Haveli, where youth volunteers greeted guests with traditional hospitality. Attendees were then guided through the intricately carved Mandir, where they learned about Hindu architecture, craftsmanship, and the deeper spiritual significance of the Mandir as a place of peace and devotion.
As twilight descended, guests gathered outdoors for a gala dinner under the glow of festive lights and the Mandir’s majestic silhouette — an unforgettable backdrop for an evening dedicated to unity and reflection.

Messages of Partnership and Light

The formal program opened with remarks from Dr. K. J. Srinivasa, the inaugural Consul General of India in Los Angeles. He reflected on the enduring U.S.–India partnership and the importance of shared celebrations like Sangam in building bridges across communities and faiths.
Following tradition, attendees participated in a ceremonial lighting of diyas — small oil lamps symbolizing the victory of light and knowledge. During the program, a letter from California Governor Gavin Newsom was read aloud, extending warm Diwali wishes to all and recognizing the event’s contribution to unity and service.

Interfaith Reflections and Shared Prayers

The interfaith segment opened with a land acknowledgment and indigenous prayer from members of the Gabrieleno/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians, honoring the original stewards of Southern California’s land.
Faith leaders from across the region then shared reflections aligned with Diwali’s universal themes of light, renewal, and hope. Participants represented:
  • Gabrieleno/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians
  • Namdhari Sikh Sangat of Los Angeles
  • Zoroastrian Association of California
  • Jain Center of Southern California
  • St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • Masjid Al Jamali – Dawoodi Bohra Community of OC/IE
  • Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple
  • Malibu Hindu Temple
  • BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Los Angeles
Each prayer highlighted a shared aspiration: that compassion, humility, and service may light the way forward for all communities.

A Message of Hope and Harmony

The evening culminated with an inspiring video address from Pujya Paramtattvadas Swami of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London (Neasden Temple). His reflections on light, positivity, and unity resonated deeply with the audience.
Drawing from BAPS’ participation in the London 2012 and Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, he looked ahead to the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, encouraging collaboration, faith-based service, and collective goodwill. “When faith communities come together,” he reminded the audience, “we illuminate the world far beyond our own walls.”

A Gathering of Global and Local Voices

Among the distinguished attendees were representatives from the following diplomatic missions, organizations, and institutions:
Consulates: India, Armenia, El Salvador, Switzerland, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, South Africa, Lithuania, and Myanmar.
Academic and Civic Organizations: University of California – Riverside, University of Southern California, California State University – Fullerton, Interfaith Youth Alliance, and LA28 Cultural Olympiad Committee.
Community and Business Leaders: LMNTRIX Cybersecurity, Asian American Hotel Owners Association, MS International, ALAPIO (Association of Los Angeles Physicians of Indian Origin), Smart Village Movement, KPC Group, and the LA Knightriders Major League Cricket Team.

Illuminating the Path Forward

As guests departed, many expressed admiration for the Mandir’s role in uniting communities through faith, culture, and service. Sangam was more than a Diwali celebration — it was a shared commitment to building bridges across traditions and reaffirming that in unity, there is light.
