Devotees from BAPS mandirs and centres across the UK joined together in a nationwide drive this winter to support local families facing food insecurity through their annual Community Food Drive.
This coordinated effort was a part of BAPS’s multifarious activities to support local communities, addressing the important issue of food insecurity.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to place significant strain on households around the country, food banks are experiencing record demand. In response, devotees and volunteers from various BAPS mandirs and centres, working in collaboration with their charity arm BAPS Charities, mobilised in a spirit of service, compassion, and collective action.
Throughout November and December, volunteers coordinated with local devotees to collect hundreds of essential non-perishable food items, including cereals, pasta, lentils, tinned goods, UHT milk, and other everyday necessities. These were donated to local food banks and community charities to support their vital work of feeding the hungry.
The nationwide collection by BAPS contributed to a combined donation of provisions equating to thousands of meals for food banks around the country, coming at a crucial time when many individuals and families continue to face financial hardships exacerbated by a difficult winter period.
The initiative also strengthened relationships between local mandirs and their surrounding community organisations, many of whom continue to rely heavily on public support at this challenging time. Some centres partnered with longstanding local charities, while others connected with new organisations responding to rising levels of food poverty.
As one volunteer later shared, “When we deliver these donations, we’re not just giving food – we’re sharing hope. Every tin, every box, every bag reminds someone that their community cares about them.”
Representatives from recipient charities expressed their appreciation for the continued support of their local BAPS mandir or centre, noting the timeliness and sensitivity of the assistance during the busy winter season.
The collective effort of devoteees and volunteers across the UK reflects the values at the heart of BAPS inspired and guided by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj – selfless service, community spirit, humility, and compassion for all. As communities continue to face unprecedented challenges, the Food Drive stands as a reminder of how meaningful change can arise through shared goodwill and sincere service.
