Devotees from BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London, joined together over the winter to support local families facing food insecurity through their annual Community Food Drive. The initiative formed part of a coordinated nationwide BAPS effort to support local communities, addressing the important issue of food insecurity.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to place significant strain on households around the country, food banks are experiencing record demand. In response, devotees and volunteers from various BAPS mandirs and centres, working in collaboration with their charity arm BAPS Charities, mobilised in a spirit of service, compassion, and collective action.
Throughout November and December, volunteers from the Mandir coordinated with local members to collect hundreds of essential non-perishable food items, including cereals, pasta, lentils, tinned goods, UHT milk, and other everyday necessities. These were donated to Brent Foodbank, operated by The Trussel Trust, in support of their vital work of ending hunger in the London Borough of Brent.
The nationwide collection by BAPS contributed to a combined donation of provisions equating to thousands of meals for food banks around the country. This came at a crucial time when many individuals and families continue to face financial hardships exacerbated by a difficult winter period.
Dahyalal Patel, a long-serving BAPS volunteer, shared, “When we deliver these donations, we’re not just giving food – we’re sharing hope. Every tin, every box, every bag reminds someone that their community cares about them.”
The collective effort of volunteers and devotees across the UK reflects the values at the heart of BAPS inspired and guided by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj – selfless service, community spirit, humility, and compassion for all. As communities continue to face unprecedented challenges, the Food Drive stands as a reminder of how meaningful change can arise through shared goodwill and sincere service.
