Hundreds of families from across the UK and Europe came together on Thursday 1 January 2026 at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London, to take part in a special mahapuja, offering prayers for global peace, family unity, and a positive year ahead.
Thousands of devotees participated both in person at the Mandir and online via a live webcast, transforming their homes into spaces of devotion by decorating their ghar mandirs, preparing sweet offerings, and joining in the prayers as one global community. Two assemblies were held during the day, in the morning and afternoon, allowing families to take part in this auspicious start to the year.
The ceremony was conducted by the resident swamis, supported by youths. Through the chanting of Vedic mantras, the swamis invoked the divine presence of God while also sharing reflections to deepen participants’ appreciation of the spiritual significance of the mahapuja.
The occasion offered a meaningful start to the year, bringing families together in a spirit of faith and positivity. Priya Patel, who attended with her family, shared, “It was such a special way to begin the year. The Mandir felt calm and uplifting, and it was touching to see so many people praying for others. My daughters were completely absorbed in the experience and even took time to offer their own prayers for those facing challenges.”
Yogvivekdas Swami, Head Swami of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha in the UK and Europe, said, “The start of a new year offers an opportunity to reflect, renew, and refocus our lives. Guided by the teachings of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, we are encouraged to nurture unity, compassion, and positivity. It was inspiring to see so many people begin 2026 with prayers for the wider community. We hope the blessings of this mahapuja continue to inspire and uplift individuals and families throughout the year ahead.”
