In a radiant display of culture and community pride, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Houston hosted a special gathering to mark a historic milestone: the inclusion of Deepavali in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 10, 2025. Hosted alongside the Consul General of India, Houston, the evening brought together civic leaders, members of the judiciary, and community representatives to celebrate this global recognition of the Festival of Lights.
Much like the lights of Deepavali themselves, the event served as a beacon of unity, highlighting how this ancient tradition continues to illuminate the path of knowledge, righteousness, and spiritual awakening for millions around the world.
The celebration was graced by a distinguished group of attendees who joined in honoring this cultural triumph. Among the notable guests were the Mayor of Missouri City, Robin Elackatt, and the Mayor of Stafford, Ken Matthews, reflecting the strong local support for the Mandir’s cultural initiatives.
The judiciary was also well-represented, with Judge Juli Matthew and Judge Surendran Pattel in attendance, underscoring the deep integration of the Indian diaspora into the fabric of American civic life. They were joined by numerous other community leaders, all gathered to witness this moment of shared heritage.
A key highlight of the evening was the commemoration of Deepavali’s new status as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Consul General of India, Houston, addressed the gathering and reflected on the significance of this designation. It is not merely a recognition of a festival, but a global acknowledgement of the values Deepavali represents — the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
Guests were welcomed into the serene atmosphere of the Mandir, a testament to traditional Hindu architecture and devotion. The backdrop of the Mandir offered a meaningful setting to reflect on the preservation of these traditions, and the light and sound show added to the commemoration of the evening.
The gathering concluded with a shared sense of pride and purpose. More than a celebration, it was a reaffirmation of the enduring power of culture to bridge communities. As Deepavali now takes its place on the global stage through UNESCO, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Houston remains committed to preserving these traditions and fostering a spirit of unity and service in the wider community.
