BAPS Mandirs across North America recently celebrated Janmashtami, honoring the divine incarnation of Bhagwan Shri Krishna on earth—a day filled with profound spiritual significance. The day came alive with devotion as attendees immersed themselves in bhajans, kirtans, austerities, and inspiring discourses by swamis. This year’s celebration centered on the theme Mamekam Sharanam Vraja, meaning devotees should be committed to seeking refuge in Bhagwan, highlighting the timeless principle from Bhagwan Shri Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita.
The program explored the concept of ashro, or refuge, through four key aspects: wisely choosing whom we place our faith in; developing unflinching ashro; surrendering with faith; and the benefits of ashro. Each segment drew from the life and divine actions of Bhagwan Shri Krishna, emphasizing his guidance to Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and its relevance for navigating life’s challenges today.
Devotees of all ages participated in the celebration through musical performances, insightful skits and speeches, and traditional Indian dances, which brought these teachings to life. The program illustrated that ashro is not just a concept, but a personal journey and a transformative experience. Stories from Bhagwan Shri Krishna’s life, such as his unwavering protection of his devotees, were paired with lessons from the Bhagavad Gita to reinforce trust along that journey.
The celebration concluded with devotional singing and heartfelt prayers. The program reinforced that true refuge lies in surrendering fully to Bhagwan and the Guru with utmost faith, love, and steadfast devotion, enabling stability even amid life’s uncertainties.
