In a spirit of devotion, unity, and celebration, the Shilanyas Mahotsav, the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for the new BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Ottawa was held with great joy and reverence on Sunday, October 26, 2025. This landmark occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter for the growing Hindu community in the Ottawa region.
The ceremony featured traditional Vedic rituals and prayers in the presence of BAPS Swamis, invoking peace and well-being for the community, the province, and the entire country.
His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj visited the City of Ottawa in 1984 and 1988, when he was honoured by the Canadian Parliament. On that day Ottawa witnessed his humility and devotion towards Bhagwan Swaminarayan, making that historic occasion a lasting memory for people around the world. He returned again in 1996. During these memorable visits, he offered heartfelt prayers for the peace, happiness, and progress of the citizens of Ottawa and all Canadians.
Inspired by his vision and values, BAPS volunteers have since been actively serving the community through a variety of activities — from spiritual assemblies and children and youth development activities to numerous humanitarian efforts led by BAPS Charities, including annual walkathons and food drives in support of local beneficiaries.
Now, the legacy of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj continues under the guidance of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the current spiritual leader of BAPS. Inspired by his vision, land has been acquired for a new Mandir in Ottawa to serve the growing number of devotees and the wider community. Once completed, the Mandir will host activities and events for people of all ages, helping to preserve Hindu traditions and spiritual values.
Special guests included:
 - His Excellency Dinesh K. Patnaik, the High Commissioner of India to Canada
 - Karen A. McCrimmon, Member of Provincial Parliament for Kanata–Carleton
 - Councillor Cathy Curry, representing Kanata North Ward 4
 - Councillor David Hill, representing Barrhaven West
In his address, the High Commissioner commended BAPS and all volunteers for their tireless efforts in serving the community. He highlighted that the upcoming Mandir will stand as a symbol of peace, service, and unity, reflecting the shared values that connect India and Canada.
BAPS also extended heartfelt gratitude to members of the Ottawa Police Service, sponsors and well-wishers for their presence and continued support.
The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony marks the first step toward realizing a long-cherished vision — a place of peace, devotion, and community service that will stand as a beacon of spirituality and harmony for all.
