The Defence Hindu Network (DHN) celebrated the festival of Diwali with a special event at Neasden Temple, bringing together members of the Armed Forces, their families, and the wider community to honour the shared values of light, service, and unity.
Guests were warmly welcomed to the Mandir and guided on a tour of its sacred spaces, offering a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural heritage that the temple represents.
The evening’s programme in the assembly hall began with Vedic prayers for peace and harmony across the world. A vibrant cultural presentation followed, featuring a traditional Gurkha (Khukuri) dance and devotional singing by swamis and volunteers of the Mandir – a heartfelt expression of faith and gratitude.
The Chief Guest for the celebration was Major General Oliver Charles Christopher Brown CBE, General Officer Commanding 3rd (United Kingdom) Division of the British Army, who joined Warrant Officer Class One (now Captain) Christopher Stephen Nicol and Flight Lieutenant Nigam Joshi, Chair of the Defence Hindu Network, in extending festive greetings to all attendees.
Sharing his experiences of the event, Major General Brown said, “This festival holds deep significance for many across Defence and the wider UK. It’s a great privilege to join you in celebrating this moment of light, hope, and unity. Diwali reminds us of the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and unity over division. These values resonate deeply with the Army and Defence and our own ethos. These values shape how we lead, how we support one another and, crucially, how we represent our nation.
“Special thanks go to the BAPS Mandir here in Neasden, Forces Solutions, and the Defence Hindu Network and its leadership for their dedication in making today’s event possible.”
Rena Amin, a senior volunteer for BAPS UK & Europe, added, “Diwali is a time of gratitude. It was an honour to appreciate today all the courageous men and women who serve our nation with dedication and integrity. On behalf of Neasden Temple, I extend our heartfelt thanks to the Defence Hindu Network for choosing to celebrate this special festival with us here. It truly reflects the spirit of Diwali in bringing communities together through duty, faith, and joy.”
Following the formal programme, guests enjoyed a community dinner that provided an opportunity to reflect, connect, and share experiences across the Armed Forces and Hindu community.
The evening concluded with a spectacular fireworks display, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and the spirit of renewal that Diwali embodies.
