Mzuzu is a city in the northern region of Malawi, in Central Africa. Despite the small Indian population in this city, Satsang assemblies were started through the efforts of Shri Rasikbhai Patel, who had settled in Mzuzu for business from Limbe city. Over time, visits by BAPS swamis gave momentum to these Satsang activities. The need for a mandir became apparent from these gatherings at devotees’ homes, and efforts to acquire land began.
In 2018, after land was acquired, the foundation stone ceremony was performed by Pujya Kothari Bhaktapriya Swami. With the cooperation and dedication of local devotees, a beautiful mandir was constructed.
Then, in Sarangpur, in 22 April 2024 , His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj performed the Vedic murti-pratishtha rituals of the murtis for the mandir.
Subsequently, two days of celebrations marked the inauguration of the new mandir in Mzuzu in the presence of Yagneshwar Swami, Nikhilesh Swami, Priyavrat Swami and other BAPS swamis.
On the morning of 19 April 2025, the Vastuhom (ritual purification of the building) and Prasad Pravesh (ceremonial entry) were performed.
In the afternoon, the murtis were honored in a grand procession through the main streets of Mzuzu. The procession was flagged off by the city's Mayor, Mr. Kondwani Bryan Nyasulu, who also walked at the forefront throughout the entire procession. His wife, Mrs. Nyasulu, walked in the women's section. At the end of the procession, the local council named the approximately 1.5-kilometer road circling the BAPS mandir as ‘Pramukh Swami Road’. The plaque was unveiled by the Mayor, City Council CEO, and Indian Ambassador Mr. Gopalakrishnan.
In the evening assembly, swamis and youths presented a programme of devotional songs. After addresses by the local police chief and the Mayor, a drama titled ‘Small Country, Great Compassion,’ written by Paramkirti Swami, was performed commemorating the grace of the Gunatit gurus on Malawi. The assembly concluded with a celebratory fireworks display.
On the morning of 20 April 2025, the Vedic rituals to install the murtis were performed by Yagneshwar Swami, Nikhilesh Swami, and Priyavrat Swami in the presence of hundreds of devotees from Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, UK, India, and other countries.
In the assembly held on this occasion, Indian Ambassador Mr. Gopalakrishnan highlighted the need for mandirs as havens for preserving and promoting Sanatan Dharma. Yagneshwar Swami also spoke eloquently on the benefits of mandirs in society.
Children also celebrated the inauguration with a traditional dance performance. The assembly concluded with the blessings of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj specially sent for this occasion.
