A vibrant and festive atmosphere filled Nottingham, Maryland, as hundreds of devotees and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the inauguration of the new BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Baltimore. Diyas, colorful rangolis, flower garlands, and decorative lights set the scene as families came together to witness a historic milestone for the Hindu community of Baltimore and Harford Counties. The origins of satsang in Baltimore trace back to the 1960s, when His Holiness Yogiji Maharaj encouraged devotees to visit the city and nurture their faith. His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj also visited the area on several occasions, including in 1984 and 1988, blessing devotees and inspiring the dream of a mandir. That vision was realized decades later with the establishment of this new house of worship in the White Marsh region of Baltimore County.
The two-day celebrations commenced on Friday, August 8, 2025, with a vibrant Nagar Yatra, a traditional parade featuring grand floats carrying the sacred murtis, as children, youth, and adults joined together in the joyous procession.
On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the inauguration day commenced with a grand Mahapuja, where devotees offered prayers for peace and well-being. Pujya Yagnavallabhdas Swami, Pujya Viveknidhidas Swami, Pujya Nilkanthsevadas Swami and other revered swamis of BAPS then performed the Murti Sthapan Ceremony (sacred image installation ceremony), officially dedicating the new mandir. These divine images had previously been consecrated by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj on July 12, 2025, at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Bochasan, India.
Distinguished leaders from Maryland joined the celebration, reflecting the mandir’s significance as a place of harmony and unity. Maryland State Senator Carl Jackson (8th Legislative District) presented an official Senate Citation, stating, “May this be a place of peace, sanctuary, and inclusion. A space that reflects the strength and diversity of our shared community.” Maryland State Delegate Harry Bhandari (8th District) shared, “Without peace inside, we cannot create peace outside. This mandir will create that inner peace.” Other honored guests included Senator J.B. Jennings (7th District), Delegate Nick Allen (8th District), Delegate Kim Ross (8th District), and Bel Air Chief of Police Charles Moore.
The inauguration of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Baltimore, marks a new beginning for the Hindu community in the region. Beyond serving as a place of worship, the mandir will continue to foster family unity, spiritual growth, and charitable service, while making a positive impact in the broader community for generations to come.
