Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament, author, and former UN Under-Secretary-General, visited the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, describing it as “one of the most remarkable structures I have ever seen, not only among temples but among the world’s finest architectural marvels.”
Swami Brahmaviharidas traditionally welcomed Dr. Tharoor with a garland and personally accompanied him as he appreciated the Mandir’s intricate artistry, symbolic design, and universal message of harmony.
An Architectural and Spiritual Masterpiece
Reflecting on his visit, Dr. Tharoor said, “Going beyond its extraordinary spiritual content, every inch of this Mandir reflects harmony and unity. From the moment you enter through the Wall of Harmony, you sense that this is not just a place of worship, it is a statement of what humanity can be when it comes together. The attention to detail is breathtaking. You could spend weeks looking at each carving and still not see them all. The artistry is not just skill; it is devotion carved in stone.”
Tribute to Nature, Nations, and the Spirit of Humanity
At the Abhishek Mandapam, Dr. Tharoor reflected on the symbolism of the world’s rivers and sands gathered from the seven Emirates, “It is truly a microcosm of creation and humanity. To see sands from across the UAE and waters representing the world’s rivers — it speaks to a universal spirit that transcends boundaries.”
Drawing from his own experience at the United Nations, he added, “I spent years at the UN talking about our common humanity. Today, I have seen the embodiment of that humanity in stone, in spirit, and in purpose.”
Respect for the UAE’s Vision and Generosity
Dr. Tharoor offered heartfelt gratitude to the UAE leadership for enabling such an inclusive spiritual landmark, “It is a remarkable act of vision and generosity by the UAE government to allow a temple of this scale, beauty, and authenticity to rise in the heart of the Islamic world. The late Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and the compassion of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed have made this possible. As I was told, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed said that if there is to be a temple, it must look like a temple. That openness reflects the courage and inclusiveness of this nation.”
A Place of Interfaith Inspiration
Accompanied by a diverse delegation, Dr. Tharoor observed, “I came with three Muslim colleagues, and they were enthralled. There were no barriers, no restrictions; only openness. That is what true spirituality is about.”
He concluded with a vision of hope, “This Mandir is not just built of stone, it is built of faith, compassion, and imagination. It reminds us that even in times of darkness, we can light a candle that ignites many more. I will leave Abu Dhabi feeling blessed and inspired.”
At the end, Dr. Shashi Tharoor said, “I extend my heartfelt thanks to Swami Brahmaviharidas for his gracious time and insights. This has been an experience unlike any other and I feel deeply blessed, moved, and uplifted, and I am certain that all who come here with openness will feel the same sense of peace and inspiration.”
