Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the New BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, in Matthews, NC

Shilanyas, the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Matthews, North Carolina, was celebrated with great reverence on May 31, 2026. The ceremony featured traditional Vedic rituals, sacred shlokas, and prayers conducted in the presence of BAPS swamis to consecrate the earth and mark the beginning of a new spiritual home for the greater Charlotte region.

His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj blessed the Charlotte community on two historic occasions. In 1996, he personally inaugurated the current BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Matthews, and in 2000, he again visited and offered prayers for the peace and progress of the entire region. The community, which first took root in the late 1970s, has since grown far beyond the capacity of its current space. Today, under the inspiring guidance of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the current spiritual leader of BAPS, that long-cherished vision for a new, expanded Mandir has taken its first tangible form.

The new Mandir will be a 72,000-square-foot, single-story facility featuring traditional shikars and ghumtis crafted in India. Designed to serve future generations, the campus will include a main assembly hall with seating for approximately 1,000 people, along with flexible space connected to the dining hall and gymnasium to accommodate larger events. The campus will provide 415 dedicated parking spaces, 16 classrooms for youth education, cultural learning, and community activities, as well as dedicated areas for daily darshan, arti, meditation, and spiritual assemblies. Site preparation began in July 2024, with vertical construction to follow. The Mandir is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2027 and will be open to all, welcoming people from every background.

The Shila Pujan Ceremony was honored by the presence of several distinguished civic leaders from across the Charlotte-Matthews region, including Mayor of Matthews John Higdon, State Senator Woodson Bradley and Mr. William Bradley, Mayor Pro Tem of Matthews Susan Chambers, and Charlotte City Council Member At-Large Dimple Ajmera. In their addresses, the guests commended the BAPS community's longstanding contributions to the spiritual, cultural, and civic life of Matthews and Charlotte. They noted that the new Mandir will stand as a symbol of peace, service, and unity for the entire region.

Guided by Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s principle, “In the joy of others, lies our own,” BAPS volunteers in Matthews and Charlotte have served the broader community for decades. Their efforts have included annual walkathons supporting local and national organizations such as Susan G. Komen and The Nature Conservancy, while also benefiting local groups including the Levine Senior Center, Rotary Club of Matthews, Matthews Free Clinic, and Kiwanis Club of Matthews. Volunteers have also organized regular blood drives, wellness screenings staffed by medical professionals, health awareness lectures, food bank partnerships, and hunger relief initiatives serving neighbors of all faiths and backgrounds. In addition, youth programs have focused on leadership development, health and wellness, character building, and community service.

The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony marks the first step toward realizing a vision that has been held in the hearts of the Matthews and greater Charlotte BAPS community for many years. The new Mandir will serve as a place of peace, devotion, and service, standing as a beacon of spirituality and harmony for generations to come.
