With the blessings of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, in February of 2000, a twenty-nine-acre plot of land at the intersection of Rockbridge Road and Lawrenceville Highway was purchased in Lilburn, GA, a quiet suburban town of Atlanta. A puja was also performed this same year by Pramukh Swami Maharaj to sanctify the land so that construction may begin.

In June 2004, Pramukh Swami Maharaj visited Atlanta for a historic spiritual assembly and led the Shilanyas Mahotsav (foundation stone-laying ceremony) for the new Mandir. Thousands of devotees participated in this sacred occasion as the foundation stones were blessed and placed for what would become a landmark of Hindu architecture in North America

BAPS broke ground on the mandir project in September 2005, with land being cleared and ready for the main foundation pouring just four months later in January of 2006.

Exquisite materials, including Turkish limestone from the region of Burdur, Italy’s Carrara marble, and Indian pink sandstone, were selected for the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Atlanta. Each stone was hand-carved in India by skilled artisans using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Thousands of intricately carved pieces were created before being carefully transported across the ocean to Georgia.

The Mandir was crafted from more than 34,000 individual hand-carved stone pieces, which were shipped to the United States in approximately 346 containers. Like a massive three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, each numbered piece was carefully cataloged, organized, and assembled according to detailed architectural plans. The structure was built using traditional stone construction methods, with the carved pieces interlocking together without the use of structural steel in the Mandir’s traditional stone components.

Construction of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Atlanta began in September 2005 and was completed in just 17 months through the dedication of thousands of volunteers who contributed approximately 1.3 million volunteer hours. Volunteers from across North America worked alongside skilled craftsmen to assemble the sacred architecture piece by piece, transforming thousands of individual stones into a place of worship and cultural heritage.

On August 26, 2007, the vision of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj came to fruition as he performed the sacred Murti Pratishtha ceremony, consecrating the sacred murtis and officially inaugurating the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Atlanta.

The inauguration was celebrated through 11 days of spiritual festivities, bringing together thousands of devotees and visitors in celebration of this historic milestone. As part of these celebrations, a grand Nagar Yatra (city procession) was held, carrying the sacred murtis through the local community. The procession traveled along Lawrenceville Highway and Rockbridge Road in Lilburn, transforming the streets surrounding the Mandir into a vibrant expression of devotion, culture, and celebration.

The inauguration festivities also included a Vishvashanti Maha-Yagna, a collective prayer for world peace, where participants offered prayers and performed sacred rituals with the aspiration of fostering harmony, goodwill, and peace throughout the world.

What began as a vision transformed into a magnificent spiritual home through the dedication of thousands of volunteers, the precision of master artisans, and the unwavering devotion of the BAPS community. The Atlanta Mandir stands today as a symbol of faith, service, and harmony — a place where generations can connect with spirituality, culture, and timeless values.
