The spritual leader of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan movement Pramukh Swami Maharaj was honored with the "Key to the City of Houston" on August 31, 2000 Houston, TX. Swamishri was warmly invited to the City Hall at 10:30am by Houston City Mayor Lee P. Brown. The meeting dignitaries began with a formal introduction by the Consulate General of India Mr.Wangdi. The Mayor of Houston, Lee P. Brown was impressed by Swamishri's energy and enthusiasm in strving to help the society even at the age of 79. He was particularly impressed by the BAPS's drive to cleanse society of its ills such as drug abuse, violence and addictions.The two leaders exchanged views on cultural diversity that exists in a megacity such as Houston. The Mayor lauded the Indians in Houston and the vast contribution they have made in the progress and prosperity of the city. Swamishri extended his good wishes and prayer for the continued growth of Houston both economically and morally. Swamishri blessed the Mayor with lasting peace and success. Swamishri then humbly presented the "Key to the City of Houston" honor to Shri Harikrishna Maharaj and said "God is the master inspirer who motivates goodness in people. He deserves the "Key to the City". The Mayor was impressed by Swamishri's humility and vowed to be present for the opening of traditional 5-pinnacled Shri Swaminarayan Temple in 2002.
