Mandirs and Satsang

The mandir is the heart of BAPS community life, and satsang is the shared spiritual practice that flows through it. This section walks you through what you will see there, what it means, and how warmly you are welcome to experience it for yourself.

What is a mandir?

A mandir is a Hindu place of worship — a temple. Why mandirs matter, though, reaches well past the walls: they are vital places of learning, built to cultivate inner peace and to nurture strong community values.

Worship, Rituals, and Architecture

At the heart of worship in a BAPS mandir are darshan, the arti ceremony, and devotional song, held within architecture that is itself an act of devotion. When you visit, you will witness practices of quiet depth:

Darshan and prayer. Darshan means beholding the divine. It is a moment of stillness and reflection — and of learning to offer prayer directly to God.

Ārti. The ārti is a centuries-old ceremony of light, accompanied by the singing of devotional songs — offered as a profound form of devotion.

Sacred design. The architecture itself is spiritual. From the towering shikhar (spires) above the sanctum to the intricately carved mandaps (halls) and pathways, every element has a purpose. There are stories in stone; there are values in art, carved into every pillar.

Visitor Guide: What to Expect

All visitors are welcome at BAPS mandirs; modest dress and removed shoes are the two main customs to know before you arrive. A little preparation will help you feel at home:

Dress and shoes. We ask visitors to wear modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees, and to remove their shoes before entering sacred spaces, as a sign of respect.

Silence and phones. Silence, and a phone put away, help preserve the tranquil atmosphere. Inside, our volunteers will happily show you where to stand and will welcome your questions. A guided tour, or time spent in our exhibitions, will repay you fully.

What Is Satsang?

Satsang means, roughly, "the company of the good" — the shared spiritual life of a community pursuing personal growth together.

Collectively, satsang happens in weekly assemblies (sabhā) and spiritual discourses (kathā); personally, it lives in daily practice, dedicated sevā (service), and the quiet work of building a supportive community.
